Professor Brooklynn Welden and Eric Henninger co-presented The Straight Ally: Calls to action for sexual diversity, at the National Organization for Women (NOW) Conference in Tampa, Florida, on June 24, 2011. Participants heard Professor’s Welden share her story of her son’s coming out disclosure, while Mr. Henninger shared some of his daily realities as a bisexual man in contemporary society. Attendants participated in three activities, moving from small “Base” groups, to “Specialist” groups, for discussion on concepts pertaining to sexuality, gender, and key issues faced by the LGBITQ community today, before sharing their insights with one another with the full group. Professor Welden explained that gender may be moved beyond the binary, illustrating this with the Native American Navajo four-genders, feminine woman, masculine man, feminine man, and masculine woman. For more information or to book a talk and workshop on expanding understanding of sex/gender issues in contemporary American society, please email:
